It has been all too long since we had a chance to come to the Gathering Place, Oahu. Our last visit to the islands had to be delayed, so Robin could undergo heart valve surgery. I am glad to say that she is fine, and I am writing this morning from the Hale Koa on Oahu. We had to chance to bring grandpa back with us, to begin our retracing of the steps that Nana Green took many years ago, when she came to the islands to teach children with dissabilities. It is a project long overdue.
We found a new place for box lunches that we wanted to share with our friends on Hawaiian Life. It is called the Steak Shack. It is located on the beach, just outside the beach in front of the Hale Koa hotel, back toward the main beach at Waikiki beach. In many respects, Waikiki beach starts in and around the western area occupied by the Hilton Hawaiian and Hale Koa Hotels.
We actually went to this place to get a sandwich at Subway. Glad we looked further. I found a $6.00 box lunch that included grilled steak, rice, and a salad. Their teriyaki sauce was great. You just can't find good Teriyaki sauce in our native Ozarks, Missouri. It's too thick.
I struck up a conversation with the girl cooking. She came to the islands to go to school at the University of Hawaii. She fell in love with Hawaii, and has decided to stay and enjoy a bit of a simple life. She has now taken up schooling at a local community college that teaches American Sign Language. It is her desire to teach others sign. Speaking with your hands is also very Hawaiian. We wish her well.
To us, that is the beginning of the Spirit of Aloha: finding beauty in a simple lunch and conversation with the person who lovingly prepared the meal. Afterall, the word Aloha means so much more than just "hello or goodbye." This young lady shared her love of Hawaii in her cooking.
We have included some picks of the Steak Shack. We hope that you will give them a try, next time you have reason to be on the western side of Waikiki Beach.
He lawai'a no ke kai papa'u, he pokole ke aho; he lawai'a no ke kai hohonu he loa ke aho.
